The Rideau Canal was originally conceived as a supply routed between Montreal and Kingston during the War of 1812. The idea was to create a route to the Ottawa River. The canal was constructed by the Royal Engineers under Colonel John By.

Today it is a pleasure boaters paradise and the locks are operated in much the same way they were when it opened in 1832. The Ottawa section, where the coordinates are given for the sign, is in the heart of downtown Ottawa at the point where there are 8 consecutive lock providing 79ft of lift. It takes 90 minutes to proceed through the 8 locks.

The segement of the canal shown above is just above the final lock which is actually under the Rideau St. Bridge shown. On the right is the Chateaeu Laurier and Canada's Parliament Buildings on the left. This section of the Rideau Canal is part of a long section that is used for skating every winter.
