The Place:
Casa Ramon Casas, also known as the Casa Casas-Carbó, is a modernist building located at number 96 Paseo de Gracia. It was designed by architect Antoni Rovira i Rabassa in 1898, decorated by Josep Pastor in 1902 and belonged to Catalan painter Ramón Casas.
The stone facade features beautifully carved balconies and a nice entrance doorway but the main interest of this building is its interior. The piece of resistance is the spectacular Moderniste fireplace on the first floor designed in wild Art Nouveau exuberance with a gigantic hearth in the form of a stylized face. Access to the interior terrace is through the main floor. It is home to one of the most beautiful patios found in the Barcelona Eixample district with views of Gaudi's Casa Mila.
In 1941, the Vinçon store was established in the building which emerged in the Sixties as the country's pre-eminent purveyor of furniture and design. Since 1973, Vinçon Barcelona was home to La Sala Vinçon, an art gallery specialized in the industrial and graphic design field. Vinçon closed its doors in July 2015.
The Person:
Ramon Casas i Carbó (4 January 1866 – 29 February 1932) was a Catalan Spanish artist. Living through a turbulent time in the history of his native Barcelona, he was known as a portraitist, sketching and painting the intellectual, economic, and political elite of Barcelona, Paris, Madrid, and beyond; he was also known for his paintings of crowd scenes ranging from the audience at a bullfight to the assembly for an execution to rioters in the Barcelona streets. Also a graphic designer, his posters and postcards helped to define the Catalan art movement known as modernisme.
