The gates and adjoining railings, that are painted black, form a main entrance to Castle Park for pedestrians and permitted vehicles. The gates are hinged on to four decorative pillars with wrought iron tops. There are four gates in all. The outer, smaller gates are for pedestrians and the inner pair open together to allow vehicle access. The pedestrian gates are flat along the top and there is a decorative beam connecting the pillars above them. The two centre gates join together when closed with their tops forming a semi circle. The two pillars to which the main gates are hinged are linked together with a decorative semi-circular beam above the gates. There is decorative wrought iron-work above the beam that has the coat-of-arms of the Pearson family, in colour, at its centre. The wrought iron-work is painted in black and gold.
The two main gates have information panels at the height of the handles. The left panel tells us:
Cowdray Gates
The right panel:
The gift of Viscount and
Viscountess Cowdray 1922
The lettering is in gold on a black background.
