The building was built by Gillette Bacon in 1835, then sold to Dr. George Merchant in 1837. In 1861, the house was again sold, this time to Abijah Moss, a prominent female banker, and known abolitionist. It served as a safe house on the Underground Railroad for the duration of the Civil War.
It served as headquarters for the Red Cross in Lockport during WWI. The YWCA has owned the property since 1927.
