Yellowknife is the largest city and capital of Northwest Territories, Canada. About 20,000 people call the city home, but it feels much larger because it is a major hub for regional government, economy, and transportation.
In the 1800s it was the fur trade that first brought explorers to Yellowknife. Then in the early 1900s, the discovery of gold really kick started growth of the town. Population in 1940 was 1,000.
Manpower demands of the Second World War shut down all mining operations except the Con Mine, but development resumed at the war's end. In 1948, the Giant gold mine became the second producing mine within the city limits. Workings of the huge Con Mine, 1,860 m deep, extended under most of the city and Yellowknife Bay. In 1986, the Giant Mine became one of fewer than a dozen gold mines in the world to produce 10,000 gold bricks.
9,500 people lived in Yellowknife in 1981 and so over the last 30 years the population has nearly doubled. That has come with the growth of the city as a transportation hub, increased tourism visits and more mines throughout the territory.
