This area is the urban sprawl created by the post war car and commercial boom. The State University of Binghamton is also on the Vestal Parkway.
The old development was on the north side of the Susquehanna River, Binghamton, Johnson City, Endicott. This road opened up farmland to post war development. Development is geared toward cars, very few sidewalks or walkable areas. It is a large retail area surrounded by residential areas. Many of the restaurants and motels service the University.
There is currently a display in the Vestal library showing arial photos of the parkway with a description of the buildings along the route. It is next to the Town Historian's office.
