From the sign above the stove: "When gas ranges were introduced during the late nineteenth century, many manufactures began turning out combination coal/gas burnishing stoves. Wood or trash was sometimes used instead of coal. This feature helped keep the kitchen warm. The dual fuel stoves were advertised as cost-effective and more convenient than simply owning a wood or gas stove."
The museum shows different aspects of innovation in American. The stove is located in a replica of a 'modern' 1930s kitchen. The kitchen is part of the permanent collection. The museum itself is houses in a house which once belonged to a local doctor.
