The original bell tower dated back to Norman times, but was partially destroyed in the earthquake of 1783, torn down in 1863, then rebuilt between 1930 and 1933 based on the design of the original.

The tower is 60 meters high and contains the biggest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the world. Designed by the firm Ungerer of Strasbourg it was inaugurated in 1933 and is the city’s main attraction even today.
