Historical Marker next to the lighthouse informs us that ...
"... the Port Burwell Lighthouse was constructed in 1840 and was part of a national network of beacon lights for ships. The Port Burwell was aiding ships transporting local timber on Lake Erie. The octagonal white and red tower is 13.7 m high and visible from up to 19 km away. The Sutherland family maintained the lighthouse until 1962 when it was decommissioned by the Canadian Coast Guard. In 1965 Port Burwell acquired the lighthouse and restored it in 1986.
It is the oldest wooden lighthouse on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie and one of the oldest surviving lights in Canada. It has a Ontario Heritage Plaque, painted barn quilt, and other monuments nearby including the Lightkeeper's House."
