This monument is to the location of the first gold discovered in Colorado. Many people think first gold was found in 1858 at the confluence of the South Platte and Cherry Creek. Gold was actually first found by a group of Cherokees on the way to the California Gold Rush. This find was kept quiet until about 10 year later when a Georgian married a Cherokee woman who knew about this find.
The monument is located in Inspiration Point Park in Denver. Note that the actual site of the gold discovery is one mile north of the monument. That area is now covered with highway overpasses and recreational bicycle trails.
