Ross Cemetery is a predominantly African-American cemetery, with many unmarked burials. It has endured years of neglect, but a Memorial Day effort in 2017 included headstone cleaning and general pickup. It does appear that the grounds are being maintained now by the adjacent Pecan Grove Memorial Park. As of this posting, the cemetery lacks signage, and can only be accessed through Pecan Grove until such time as the roadwork on Old Mill Road is complete. Maggie Brown is buried by a tree, just inside the current cemetery entrance.
This is a slab of concrete that has been molded into an interesting shape, resembling a crude arrowhead, perhaps. There are some guide lines drawn by the headstone's creator, and the inscription is:
Maggie Brown
Bone 1893
Age 42
Died
11 9 1935
--
Those who are interested in linguistics will note the attempt to render a Southern American pronunciation of "born" as "bone".
Date of Birth: 1893
Date of Death: 11/9/1935
Material: Concrete
