The Erie Canal is now part of the New York State Canal System. The original canal routing was through the nearby village of Oriskany. The lock here was opened after 1918. In 2017, canal traffic is mostly recreational boating.
The Canalway Trail system and the Lock 20 State Canal Park make this a welcoming place for visitors. Near to Rome and to Utica, this a great place for activities ranging from geocaching to fishing.
