Mt. Olivet Cemetery is located on the southeast edge of Hugo. It is a large area, with approximately 7100 burials to date. The coordinates above are for the vehicle entrance located on the west side of the cemetery. This entrance has a 7 ft. angled rock wall with 9 ft. high pillars, which flanks the drive. Along the cemetery drives, there are low rock curbs.
On the south side of the cemetery is another entrance, which does not have a drive and which is kept locked. This south entrance also has a 7 ft entrance with 9 ft. pillars, and the wall extends a ways down the perimeter at a 4 ft. high level. At this entrance, there is a bronze WPA shield showing the date 1936-1937.
The WPA workers often inserted a little of themselves into their work, and we often see shaped rocks used for decoration. At the south entrance, there is a nicely shaped heart rock beneath the WPA shield, and on one of the pillars, you can see a granite chunk and a couple of pieces of petrified wood inserted into the wall (see photo gallery).
This is a beautiful cemetery, with rolling land, and many large trees. A section known as "Showman's Rest is dedicated to the many many circus performers whose circuses wintered in Hugo. (
