In Newport, along the Cliff Walk, is a place named Forty Steps, which has names of people and organizations engraved on them.
Forty Steps is a feature along the shore of Newport, overlooking the eastern part of Narragansett Bay. Passing through is the Cliff Walk, a well-known trail running along the shore and behind some of the well-known 'cottages' such as the Marble House and the Breakers. Forty Steps is also at the end of Narragansett Avenue. Parking is hard to find in Newport, so I'm not sure if public parking is close by. We parked at Easton's Beach parking lot, then walked to a bus station on Bellevue Ave, then took a bus to the south end of the Cliff Walk, then walked the three or so miles to here.
At the street level is a square area bounded by walls make of stone and concrete. Near one end is an opening where the stairs start. The stairs, with stone steps engraved with names, lead right to the water.
The names are either individuals or names of organizations. A web site found stated that the names were those who made donations during the renovations done in 1980. The stairs existed for a long time before and were made of wood until 1890, when they were replaced by an iron stairway, which was destroyed by the hurricane of 1938.
