Built in 1916, this is a Luten arch bridge of concrete construction manufactured by the Topeka Bridge & Iron Co. Highway 77 runs from the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona to its intersection with I-10 in Tucson. Before the interstate system it was the only direct route from Tucson to the mining town of Globe. Phoenix was not a city at the time. This old bridge has been abandoned as a new bridge carries the increased traffic. The bridge is just a lane and a half wide and would barely accomodate a modern car. The community of Winkelman has placed barriers at either end to prevent any motorized traffic. Winkelman is a small town of 300 surrounded by copper mines. Most of the commercial district has been abandoned and reduced to empty shells eliminating any current use for the bridge.
