Once a rest stop on U.S. Highway 80, Dateland became irrelevant when Interstate 8 was constructed. An auxiliary airfield was established during WWII. Abandoned, the airfield was subdivided for homes but never completed. With a 2000 census of 852 Dateland now consists of a fuel stop, school with post office and a few houses. Most of the land is vacant. There is the remains of a date palm orchard.
