[EN] "With its striking design features, the Berlin Cathedral is a must for every church lover and visitor to the city.
With its striking dome, the mighty Berlin Cathedral in the centre of Berlin is hard to miss. As the former court and cathedral church of the Hohenzollern family, the cathedral was rebuilt between 1894 and 1905 under Emperor Wilhelm II.
Today, the baptismal and marriage churches, the imperial staircase, the Hohenzollern crypt, the Cathedral Museum and, of course, the sermon church with its impressive dome are worth a visit.
History of the Berlin Cathedral
The history of the cathedral goes back to the Middle Ages, when in 1465 the construction of an upper parish and cathedral church on the Spreeinsel began. In 1747 Frederick the Great had a baroque church with a drum dome built by the master builder Johann Boumann the Elder. Around 70 years later, Karl Friedrich Schinkel renovated the interior and exterior of this church in classicist style. After several minor alterations to the cathedral, Emperor Wilhelm II decided in 1894 to accept the design of the cathedral master builder Julius Carl Raschdorff, which provided for the demolition of the old cathedral.
Architecture of the Berlin Cathedral
The Berlin Cathedral as a central building in the style of a baroque influenced Italian High Renaissance was divided into three parts from the beginning. The building originally consisted of the sermon church, the baptismal and marriage church and the monumental church, which no longer exists today. The dome was flanked by four corner towers and rose a good 114 metres above street level. Inside, the cathedral was provided with extensive New Testament and church reformatory elements."
