Anthony of Padua was born in Portugal in 1195. He became a priest and first joined the Augustinian order and later became a Franciscan. He taught and preached throughout northern Italy and France. Most of his life focused around Padua. He died in 1231 while returning to Padua. This statue of St. Anthony is on the front wall of the parish church named in honor of him. Statues of St. Anthony show him holding the bible, the Christ child, or lillies, or all three. In this example he holds the bible in his right hand and the Christ child is standing on the bible.
