Die Kapelle der Versöhnung wurde auf dem ehemaligen Grenzstreifen genau dort errichtet, wo die Versöhnungskirche bis zu ihrer Sprengung 1985 gestanden hatte. Die Gemeindeglieder der Evangelischen Versöhnungsgemeinde lebten nördlich und südlich der Bernauer Straße. 90 Prozent der Gemeinde kam aus dem West-Berliner Stadtteil Wedding, alle weiteren Mitglieder stammten aus dem Stadtteil Mitte, also aus dem Ostteil Berlins. Als am 13. August 1961 die Sperrmaßnahmen erfolgten, bedeutete dies auch das Ende der grenzüberschreitenden Gemeinde. An zwei Sonntagen konnte Pastor Hildebrandt noch den Gottesdienst feiern. Danach blieb die Kirche im Todesstreifen für ihre Mitglieder aus West-Berlin unerreichbar.
Im Zuge des Grenzausbaus wurde die Kirche 1985 auf Befehl der DDR-Regierung gesprengt. Davon zeugt das Turmkreuz rechts neben der Kapelle. Es flog bei der Sprengung von der Spitze des Kirchturms und verformte sich durch die Wucht des Aufpralls. Nach der Wiedervereinigung erhielt die Versöhnungsgemeinde ihr Kirchengrundstück zurück. Mit der Auflage, das Gelände als sakralen Ort zu nutzen. Die Kapelle der Versöhnung wurde nach Plänen der Berliner Architekten Peter Sassenroth und Rudolf Reitermann errichtet. Sie steht über den Fundamenten des Chorraums der gesprengten Versöhnungskirche. Ein oval geformter Stampflehmbau wird von einem Wandelgang umgeben. Lichtdurchlässige Holzlamellen ummanteln den Wandelgang und begrenzen ihn so nach außen. Die Glocken der alten Kirche konnten gerettet werden. Sie hängen vor der Kapelle in einem Holzgerüst und werden von Hand geläutet. Im Innern der Kapelle wurden die Kellertreppe der Kirche freigelegt, ebenso die Reste der 1961 zugemauerten Kellertür. Das Altarbild der Versöhnungskirche befindet sich in einer Nische, die als Lichtschacht das Dach überragt. Daran schließt der nach Osten ausgerichtete Kern der Kapelle aus massivem Stampflehm an.
Die Kapelle der Versöhnung wurde im Jahr 2000 feierlich eingeweiht. Sie ist die Gottesdienststätte der Evangelischen Versöhnungsgemeinde und zugleich Teil der Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer. Gemeindemitgliedern wie Besuchern soll die Kapelle als Ort der Erinnerung und Andacht dienen. Im neuen Altar der Kapelle liegt das Mauertotenbuch. Darin stehen die Biografien der Menschen, die von 1961 bis 1989 an der Berliner Mauer zu Tode gekommen sind. Dienstags bis freitags wird in den Andachten um 12 Uhr regelmäßig eines Mauertoten gedacht."

The Chapel of Reconciliation was built on the former border strip exactly where the Church of Reconciliation stood until it was demolished in 1985. The parishioners of the Evangelical Reconciliation Church lived north and south of Bernauer Strasse. 90 percent of the congregation came from the West Berlin district of Wedding, all other members came from the Mitte district, i.e. from the East Berlin district. During the blasting it flew from the top of the church tower and was deformed by the force of the impact. The Chapel of Reconciliation was inaugurated in 2000. It is the place of worship of the Protestant Church of Reconciliation and at the same time part of the Berlin Wall Memorial. The chapel is intended as a place of remembrance and devotion for parishioners and visitors alike. In the new altar of the chapel lies the Wall Death Book. It contains the biographies of the people who died at the Berlin Wall between 1961 and 1989. Tuesdays to Fridays, the devotions at 12 noon regularly commemorate the death of one of the Wall's people."
