Let history remember - Women, while serving their country, have been wounded, have been imprisoned, and have given their lives same as men.
Women in the military have a history that extends over 3,000 years into the past. From the American
Revolution to the present Global War on Terrorism, women have served in an ever-increasing number
of diverse roles in the U.S. Military. Ever since "Molly Pitcher" replaced her husband when he
collapsed at his cannon during the Revolutionary War, woman have continually proven that the
narrow stereotype, limiting their choice of occupation, was wrong.Throughout history, women warriors have demonstrated their patriotism and fighting spirit. Women
have proven that the heart of the warrior is not limited to one gender. When freedom is threatened,
women warriors are equal to any task...and when their country calls, they respond - not in gender-
hyphenated rotes - but as soldiers.
Eight women died while serving in Vietnam. Their names can be found inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial wall.
The Persian Gulf War involved more women, in military than any other war in U.S. history. Over
40,000 women served in key combat support positions thoughout the Persian Gulf region. Eighteen
to twenty percent of the U.S. military forces that served in Afghanistan were women.
Some of the military specialities that women currently fill include: Artillery, Infantry, Intelligence,
Military Police, Calvary Scout, Aircraft Technician, Vehicle Mechanic, Medical, Nursing, Aviation
Supprt Specialist, Pilot, and Navigator.
There are 1,824,198 women veterans in the United States. Had all these women not come forward,
willingly volunteering to serve in the military, our military ranks would have to rely on the draft.
