[GER] Die Teufelsschlucht befindet sich am Ostrand des Ferschweiler-Plateaus im Naturpark Südeifel in der Nähe von Irrel.
Sie entstand gegen Ende der letzten Eiszeit, vor rund 10.000 Jahren infolge eines Felssturzes bzw. einer Serie von Felsstürzen.
Maßgeblich für dieses Ereignis waren die geologische Situation zum einen und die klimatische Situation zum anderen. Die stark geklüfteten, mehr oder weniger porösen Gesteinsschichten des sogenannten Luxemburger Sandsteins (geologisch in den unteren Jura, das Lias einzuordnen) lagern auf den zur Wasserundurchlässigkeit neigenden Schichten des Keuper. Somit ergibt sich bei fortschreitender Verwitterung eine instabile Lagerung durch Unterschneidung der Sandsteinbasis. Gegen Ende der letzten Eiszeit erreichte diese Unterschneidung in Kombination mit ausgedehnter Frostsprengung wohl ein Maximum, das besagte Felsstürze zur Folge hatte.
Heute zeugen zahlreiche Felsblöcke an den Hängen des Ferschweiler Plateaus von den Massenbewegungen dieser Zeit. Die Teufelsschlucht ist eine Felsspalte von etwa einem bis fünf Meter Breite, die als direkte Folge der Felssturzereignisse entstand.
Mit ihren steilen Felswänden, engen Schluchten und Spalten ist die bizarre Felsenlandschaft der Teufelsschlucht ein ideales Ausflugsziel und ein Startpunkt für weitere Wanderungen in die Umgebung.

[ENG] The Devil's Gorge is located on the eastern edge of the Ferschweiler plateau in the South Eifel Nature Park near Irrel.
It was formed towards the end of the last ice age, about 10,000 years ago, as a result of a rockfall or a series of rockfalls.
The geological situation on the one hand and the climatic situation on the other were decisive for this event. The strongly fissured, more or less porous rock layers of the so-called Luxembourg sandstone (geologically classified in the Lower Jurassic, the Lias) lie on the layers of the Keuper which tend to be impermeable to water. As the weathering progresses, this results in unstable storage due to undercutting of the sandstone base. Towards the end of the last ice age, this undercutting in combination with extensive frost blasting probably reached a maximum, which resulted in the aforementioned rockfalls.
Today, numerous boulders on the slopes of the Ferschweiler Plateau bear witness to the mass movements of this period. The Devil's Gorge is a crevice about one to five metres wide, which was created as a direct result of the rockfall events.
With its steep rock faces, narrow gorges and crevices, the bizarre rocky landscape of the Devil's Gorge is an ideal destination for excursions and a starting point for further hikes in the surrounding area.
