Heaton Cooper was born in Manchester and studied art under George Clausen. His painting took him to Yorkshire, Morocco and Norway. Whilst in Norway he married Mathilde. Unable to earn a living in Norway he returned to Bolton, and later the Lake District. In the Lake District he established himself as one of the dominant Lakes artists. He established an art studio and shop, which still exhibits and sells prints of his works.

"Furness Abbey in the Vale of Nightshade",was painted by A. Heaton Cooper for the book The English Lakes, Painted by A. Heaton Cooper, Described by Wm T. Palmer, 1908 (2nd edition). An image of the painting can be found at the Old Cumbrian Gazeteer and also as a Wikimedia file.
