Hearne visited Furness in 1777 to make this drawing. It was later engraved by William Byrne (1743 - 1805) and Samuel Middiman (1750 - 1831) for Byrne and Hearne's 'Antiquities of Great Britain', published in 1786. The pen and ink on paper drawing is in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
The artist has used some artistic license in the drawing, particularly in the perspective and relative height of the structures.
