Hearne served a five year apprenticeship to William Woollett, England’s most outstanding landscape engraver, in 1765. In 1771 he became draughtsman to Sir Ralph Payne, Governor of the Leeward Islands. On his return from the Leeward Islands he produced 84 drawings for engraving in his publication Antiquities of Great Britain, based on a trip around the kingdom. His travels brought him to the Lake District in 1777 and 1778. On this trip he was joined by patron Sir George Beaumont and artist Joseph Farrington.
Hearne was collected by Dr Thomas Munro, an influential figure in the lives of artists of the 1790s, including JMW Turner and Thomas Girtin. IT was Munro who later arranged a funeral for Hearne.
Published in 1786 by James Phillips as part of Thomas Hearne's 'Antiquities of Great Britain; illustrated in views of monasteries, castles and churches. The engraving can be found on Wiki Commons and in the Wordsworth collection.
