The first horse races that took place in the town of Kelso was in 1734, but the current racecourse was opened in 1822 which was flat racing only until 1888 when it switched to jump racing only and has remained that way ever since.

The course is situated north of the town and features fourteen fixtures lasting from the autumn through to the spring, with Ladies Day in late May being the most popular fixture.

The two left-handed tracks are sharp, with the chase course being a mile and six hundred yards in circumference, and the hurdles course three hundred yards less. The course is unique in having the bookmakers behind the stands due to the lack of space between the stands and course.
