"New green slate dialplate 1961, designed and organised by the Warham Guild. Renovation arrangd by Sir Paul Benthall in memory of his cousin Mary Clementina Benthall. Upright Arabic numerals 7 – 12 – 4 with hour lines only. Circular hole in dialplate around origin reveals older mosaic of a left human eye. Motto over: ‘Out of the strong came forth sweetness’ (from Sampson’s riddle). Below the dial is a carved stone lion’s head. A hole in its mouth leads to a beehive in the gallery, hence the motto."
