The Capitol Lichtspielhaus was built in 1927 and opened in 1928, starting with a hall offering 600 seats.
In 1991 the cinema was sold to the UFA, which resold it to another cinema operator in 1993.
With the opening of the Cineplex in Gotha in October 2014, the Capitol was closed and transformed into an art house cinema. For one year, however, there was no cinema operation.

On 29 October 2015, the Capitol was reopened as an art-house cinema. Only the lower hall with 182 seats is still in use. The upper cinema room is no longer accessible to the public. The cinema is organized by Cineplex.
