The Erfurt City Museum presents the over 1260-year history of the city of Erfurt, including its prehistory. It has its headquarters in the Haus zum Stockfisch, a three-storey Renaissance building in the old town. Numerous exhibits, certificates, documents and maps are shown there, but also multimedia forms of presentation, such as an elaborate film about the city's history with aerial photographs, computer animations, etc. are offered.

One focus is on the medieval heyday of the Luther and university city. In the representative halls of the ground floor, the relics of the old town hall with the valuable town silver are shown, and the town is symbolized as a sacred community by means of numerous church treasures. Among the most important exhibits are also the insignia of the university with the valuable scepters, as well as a collection of the Reformation period. On the upper floors there are exhibits from the 19th and 20th centuries.
