The Esquiline Obelisk is one of the thirteen ancient obelisks of Rome, located in Piazza Esquilino, behind the apse of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, in the center of the Esquilino district from which it takes its name.

It has a height of 14.75 meters and with the base and the cross reaches 25.53 meters.

It probably dates from the time of Domitian, in imitation of the Egyptian obelisks and placed with the obelisk of the Quirinal at the entrance of the Mausoleum of Augustus. Here it was found in 1527 with its twin and was rebuilt by architect Domenico Fontana in 1587 by order of Pope Sixtus V.
