From 'Pre-History' there had been a natural rock pool at the southern end of Bondi Beach. Going back to the early 1880's locals were petitioning the local council for swimming pool (with changing rooms); so in 1892 a pool was built here, with the Bondi Amateur Swimming Club being formed. The pool was enlarged to 50 yard length in 1915, and then was enlarged to the Olympic 50 metres length in 1930.
While a couple of other swimming were formed to use the popular pool, it was the formation of the Bondi Icebergs in 1929 (whose mantra is to swim no matter the temperature of the water) that brought the pool to the worlds knowledge.
There have been several renovations to the multi-tiered club house and change rooms, as concrete spalling from the continuous exposure to sea spray eroded it. Back in 2020 (pre-Covid) it cost $9 for an adult, and $6 for child under 12 years old. A yearly membership in one of the general swim clubs could be $250/year. But a restriction is placed on those trying out for the Bondi Icebergs, of having to swim a certain number of times in winter.

[My younger son had flown over from Perth, and I had only just picked him up from the airport, but, as it was my 60th Birthday, I was able to go wherever I wanted, and Nicholas came along with me.]
