This pillar can be found at 125 metres on the Hill of Canterland, a low height in southern Aberdeenshire (formerly Kincardineshire), not far from the border with Angus. The hill is on the south-western extremity of a range of hills in the Mearns that stretch north-eastwards all the way up the coast to Stonehaven. It is surrounded by higher hills to the north and east. The hill is just over a mile to the east of the village of Marykirk, and three miles west of the North Sea coast. The hill is actually a ridge running north-eastwards, with the north-west facing side wooded, and the south-east side open farmland. The pillar is situated on the open side next to a cairn amidst long grass and gorse which covers the south facing flush bracket. The pillar is in good condition and views are best to the south-east looking seawards with the woods blocking views northwards.

STEEPNESS: A gentle gradient from the south-west.

TERRAIN: A reasonable track up most of the hill, then a short journey southwards along a fainter path through long grass.

ACCESSIBILITY: A track heads up the hill north-eastwards from a minor road around a mile east of Marykirk. A sign on the gate at the start prohibits parking. From here it is less than a mile to the pillar.

NAVIGATION: After the track enters the wood on the hill it reaches its highest point at some power lines. From here a faint path bears southwards through a clearing and emerges onto the open side of the hill. The pillar can be seen ahead on the left amidst the gorse with a small fence to cross only yards from it.

DANGER: None if following the track.
