Carl Linnaeus (latinized as Carolus Linnaeus) or, after being elevated to nobility in 1761, Carl von Linné (latinized as Carolus a Linné) (Råshult, May 23, 1707 - Uppsala, January 10, 1778) was a Swedish physician, botanist, zoologist and geologist. His most influential works are Species plantarum, the first edition (1753) of which has been the starting point of the botanical nomenclature since 1905, and Systema naturae, the tenth edition of which (1758) is the starting point of the zoological nomenclature.
In April 1735 he left for the Netherlands to obtain his PhD at the University of Harderwijk. He would then be allowed to establish himself as a doctor.
After the promotion, he traveled on to Leiden. There, with the help of Gronovius and a financial contribution from Scottish physician Isaac Lawson, he published his Systema naturae, in which he divided nature into three realms (mineral, plant and animal kingdoms).
The bust of Linnaeus was placed in the tower in 1869 as a tribute. It is a cement stone replica of an original made by the Belgian sculptor de Redeker.
