The original railway line connected the cities of Bradford and Wakefield. This part of the line passed through Dewsbury, Earlsheaton and Ossett.

This tunnel was reinstated for cyclists and walkers as part of the formation of the Dewsbry to Ossett Greenway, a 'rails to trails route'.

This route forms part of the National Cycle route 699, is 3 miles long and opened in 2013.
