Le premier club Soroptimist International (SI) a été créé en 1921, dans la ville d’Oakland en Californie. Les 80 femmes, toutes engagées dans la vie professionnelle, qui entouraient Violet Richardson, première Présidente du SI, se réunissaient chaque semaine pour débattre de projets de service, autour de conférences sur diverses questions touchant le monde entier afin d’élargir les horizons des membres.
Le premier projet était « Save the Redwoods » c’est-à-dire « Sauvons les séquoias » - ces grands arbres anciens qui étaient abattus au profit d’entreprises très puissantes du secteur du bois. Ce combat fut gagné par les Soroptimist grâce au soutien du public. Une grande partie de la forêt de séquoias a été protégées, et existe encore aujourd'hui.
Plusieurs clubs Soroptimist ont ensuite été créés le long des côtes du Pacifique et de l'Atlantique, avec une préoccupation croissante des femmes pour tous les sujets touchant leurs communautés.
En 1924, Suzanne Noël fonde le club Soroptimist International de Paris, le premier club Soroptimist en Europe. Elle anime une série de conférences sur le Soroptimist dans le monde entier, ce qui entraîne la création de clubs dans toute l'Europe. Suzanne Noël est devenue plus tard la première Présidente de la Fédération européenne.
Le SI est l’organisation féminine la plus représentée dans le Monde.
Le Réseau Soroptimist compte plus de 75.000 membres répartis dans 3.000 clubs et 4 Fédérations.
Chaque année, le SI collecte plus de 7 millions de dollars et met en œuvre plus de 4.000 projets pour aider un million de femmes et de filles dans le monde.
Suivant leur devise « Comprendre Défendre Entreprendre », les SI s'engagent au niveau local, national etinternational, dans des projets et des actions concrètes, visant notamment :
• L’éducation des femmes et des filles
• L’autonomisation et le leadership des femmes
• La lutte contre la violence à l’égard des femmes et des filles
• La santé
• L’environnement
afin d’améliorer les conditions de vie des femmes et des enfants et la défense de la paix.
En France près de 2500 membres dans 116 clubs agissent.
