In second line of the the song "Wrapped Around Your Finger" by Sting there is the phrase "Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes". This refers to two mythological monsters located at each ends of the Strait of Messina between Messina on the island of Sicily and Reggio Calabria on the mainland of Italy.

The Strait of Messina was and can be a particularly perilous passage. In ancient Greek era ships passing through the Strait were in reach of archers from both sides. In addition the currents could create a dangerous whirlpool. According to Greek mythology, Scylla and Charibdes were monsters that would attack ships passing through the Strait of Messina.

Thus the phrase "Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes" means caught in a situation that is extremely challenging with no good solution.
