The racecourse in Cologne-Weidenpesch was built between 1897 and 1898 at the behest of the then mayor of Cologne, Wilhelm von Becker, and was the first professional sports facility in Cologne. The track was inaugurated on September 3, 1898 and the first race took place. The club Kölner Renn-Verein 1897 e.V., founded in 1897, is still the operator of the racetrack. Since 2010 the races have been organized in cooperation with the umbrella organization "German Racing".

The imposing, two-story main grandstand at the finish was planned by architect Otto March. In 1983 it was placed under a preservation order. Later, a second, less complex grandstand was built next to it. Behind the stands there are numerous betting desks and various gastronomic offers.

Cologne's racecourse is not only famous worldwide for its age, important races are still held here today. This includes the "Price of Europe", Germany's largest international horse race. Other important annual races are the Gerling Prize, the Mehl-Mühlens Race or the Rhineland Cup. Up to 20,000 spectators are present at the big races, around 140,000 spectators visit the racetrack each season.
