Emperor Charles the Fourth granted the right to brew beer to the Lesser town Augustinians at the St. Thomas monastery. The brewery was founded in 1352. At first they brewed beer only for the needs of the cloister, but then, they quickly started to supply beer to the entire neighborhood. The originally wooden building of the brewery was rebuilt a number of times.
In 1420, during the Hussite wars, the brewery building literally collapsed under the blows of an excited mob of people. There were more-fortunate times under the reign of Emperor Rudolf the Second, when the Lesser Town brewery became the exclusive supplier of beer to the royal court. At the end of the 19th century, the brewery beer hall became a popular meeting place for bohemian artists.
The house currently serves as a hotel.

Ceský král Václav II., nástupce Premysla Otakara II., povolal roku 1285 do Prahy rád augustiniánu poustevníku. Stalo se tak se svolením pražského biskupa Tobiáše a opata brevnovského kláštera
Krištana. Svolení opata Krištana bylo zapotrebí proto, jelikož zástupcum nového rádu bylo vykázáno mestište v severovýchodní cásti Menšího Mesta pražského, Malé Strany, a pozemek patril brevnovským benediktinum. Ti zde dokonce již dríve vystaveli kostel a kapli sv. Doroty. Augustiniáni zde následne obdrželi ješte další pozemky. Starý kostel který byl zasvecen sv. Tomáši a kapli sv. Doroty strhli a zacali budovat nový, na tehdejší dobu velkolepý chrám. Chrám, tehdy ješte gotický, jehož lod byla posvecena jménem sv. Augustina, se opet nazýval kostel sv. Tomáše. Slavnostne vysvecen byl 17. dubna 1379. Soucasne s chrámem byly staveny i klášterní a hospodárské budovy. Do kategorie hospodárských budov patril i tehdy nezbytný pivovar.
Založení pivovaru je všeobecne kladeno k roku 1352. Byl prevážne drevený a v té dobe stál v míste dnešního malostranského domu U TO cápu tam, kde je dnes Valdštejnská hospoda. Je nejstarším pražským pivovarem.
Svatotomášský pivovar prosperoval ješte za první republiky, kdy byl také zmodernizován. Augustiniáni zde již pivo sami nevarili, pivovar byl pronajímán svetským nájemcum. Celý rocní výstav piva byl také na míste spotrebován, nejaký cas se pivo i lahvovalo. Soumrak pivovaru nastal v padesátých letech, kdy se tu také prestalo varit pivo.
Dnes dum slouží jako hotel.
