This pillar can be found at West Hills in the rural parish of Carmyllie, some six miles to the north-west of the Angus coastal town of Arbroath. The pillar is situated at 197 metres, around the highest point of an area that is high windswept rural land, essentially the eastern extremity of the Sidlaw Hills as they merge into the coastal plain. The flattish hill that the pillar lies on is in a field not far north of a minor road that heads eastwards from the B9128 road to the hamlet of Redford, two miles to the east. The pillar remains in good condition with the North Sea in view to the south-east, but the best views are to the north-west towards the distant mountains.

STEEPNESS: None.

TERRAIN: Arable farmland.

ACCESSIBILITY: Some two hundred yards to the north of the public road which is fenceless at this point. Access depends on the state of the field regarding crops. Winter is probably the best time to visit.

NAVIGATION: The pillar is visible from the road on approach from the south-west and can be reached from this direction.

DANGER: Avoid if the field is in crop unless tyre tracks can be followed.

Type of Trigpoint: Triangulation Pillar

Condition: Good

Number on Flush Bracket: S1610
