After snowbirding in the Deltona, FL, area for almost ten years, imagine my surprise when I read an article through Facebook describing a monkey rescue right down the road from our home. Currently Primate Paradise provides a safe home for 21 capuchin monkeys, including one retired circus monkey, and one squirrel monkey. Many of these animals began life as someone's pet and as the monkey grew and became stronger and more, well...., monkey-like, their owners realized that they had bitten off a little more than they could handle. Since capuchins have about a 45 year life span, the owners knew quickly that they needed to do something and, fortunately for them, Primate Paradise was willing to take the responsibility for their pets.

My first knowledge of the rescue was in this article (visit link) . Visitors are welcome from April through October but by appointment only. Once you get that lucky appointment, you will be allowed onto the unique grounds and escorted by Andy and Linda who provide answers to any and all questions about their charges. Visitors have the opportunity to hand feed the monkeys who perch on their shoulders to be fed mini marshmallows or gummy candies. They also enjoy being bottle fed baby formula. Since visitor groups are limited to five, everyone will have the opportunity to interact with the residents.

There is no fee to visit the preserve but tax deductible donations are accepted. Please be generous in your donations as these animals are not cheap to maintain. The owners estimate that it takes about $1000 a month to keep the monkeys in fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition, there are medical bills and general maintenance for this non profit preserve.

Please do not just drive by this preserve to log a find using the sign, the animals are not visible from the road. A visit into the preserve is worth your time and I would love to have you share a story and pictures about your visit.
