The parish of Marykirk which features the village of the same name, was situated in the old county of Kincardineshire, now the southern part of Aberdeenshire, close to the border with the county of Angus, in eastern Scotland. The war memorial, unveiled in 1921, is situated just under two miles to the north-west of the village, near the small settlement of Luthermuir on the B974 road a few yards from the turn off on the A90 dual-carriageway.

The memorial is a large red granite stone slab, placed on a stone base and facing westwards towards the roadside, and set within a garden area, reached by a gravel pathway. The stone features a Celtic bass-relief and a large bronze plaque containing 40 names with rank and date of death. The inscriptions read as follows:
