The Netherlands has a new long-distance hiking trail. Just kidding. It is already two thousand years old! Two thousand years ago, the Romans built a road south of the Rhine, the Limes, after the Roman word for border. The Limes connected the dozens of fortresses and watchtowers with which the Romans wanted to protect themselves against raids from the barbarians from the north - the Germans.

As a reminder of our Roman past, a route has been plotted that follows approximately the old route and visits the places where this past has demonstrably been present. It runs from Katwijk - where the Rhine flowed into the sea at the time - past Oude Rijn, Kromme Rijn and Nederrijn to behind Nijmegen where the path crosses the border, towards Xanten. A journey of two hundred kilometers through the Dutch landscape, from the dunes in the west, through the peat meadows and the land of the major rivers, to the sandy dams in the east.
