De Haarlemmer Laurens Janszoon Coster werd in Nederland beschouwd als uitvinder van de boekdrukkunst in 1423. Het beeld wordt door de inwoners Lautje genoemd. / Coster from Haarlem was considered the inventor of printing in the Netherlands in 1423.

"Het circa drie meter hoge bronzen beeld toont Coster ten voeten uit, gekleed in een lang geplooid gewaad. Hij houdt met zijn linkerhand een boek tegen zijn borst geklemd en toont in zijn rechterhand een gevleugelde letter A. Achter hem staat een boomstronk.
De achtzijdige sokkel staat op een twee treden hoog stoepje en is circa vier meter hoog. Hij is gemaakt van Escauzijnse steen, natuursteen afkomstig uit de groeve van Écaussinnes. De sokkel heeft vier brede en vier smalle zijden en heeft twee inspringingen. Hij is gedecoreerd met gotische drie- en vierpasmotieven en op de zijden een bladmotief in de band die onder de dekplaat loopt. Op de vier brede zijden is een inscriptie aangebracht, in het Latijn en in het Nederlands. De Nederlandse opschriften luiden:
LOURENS JANSZOON COSTER, HULDE VAN HET NEDERLANDSCHE VOLK, MDCCCLVI
UITVINDER VAN DE BOEKDRUKKUNST MET BEWEEGBARE UIT METAAL GEGOTEN LETTERS"

Description of the statue (Source: Wikipedia):
"The bronze statue, about three meters high, depicts Coster in full length, dressed in a long pleated robe. He holds a book clamped to his chest with his left hand and shows a winged letter A in his right hand.
The eight-sided plinth stands on a two-step high step and is approximately four meters high. It is made of Escauzine stone, natural stone from the quarry of Écaussinnes. The base has four wide and four narrow sides and two indents. It is decorated with gothic three- and four-pass motifs and on the sides a leaf motif in the binding that runs under the cover plate. The four broad sides have an inscription, in Latin and in Dutch. The Dutch inscriptions read:
LOURENS JANSZOON COSTER, TRIBUTE OF THE DUTCH PEOPLE, MDCCCLVI
INVENTOR OF BOOK PRINTING WITH MOVABLE METAL CAST LETTERS"
