Het was de plek waar grenswachters in het verleden tal van smokkelaars betrapten.
De hut vertelt het verhaal over smokkelpraktijken aan de grens met Duitsland, die voortduurden tot de jaren zeventig.
Tot aan de jaren zeventig bood het hutje een schuilplek aan commiezen: grenswachters die belast waren met de opsporing van smokkelaars.
Vanuit kijkgaten konden de wachters ongezien de grens controleren.
Vanuit deze hutten moesten grenswachters onder meer tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog de smokkel van boter, kaas en vee inperken.
Sommige hutten werden nog tot in de jaren zeventig gebruikt, totdat de Europese douane-unie in 1968 een einde maande aan de smokkelpraktijken.
