Architectural Style: Gothic Revival

This church, and the area around here, was the German Society brought in large numbers of Germans. Farmers, brewers, etc...the Missouri Wine industry really started here...
Most people think of the old Germans as Lutherans, or Methodist Episcopal...but many really were Catholic.
The small towns in this part of Missouri were all German, the churches and schools German was the only spoken language. And they built magnificent churches, with high reaching steeples, no matter which religion was represented.

The bell in this tower still rings for mass. The steeple itself can be seen for many miles around. It is high on a hill (bluff) which originally was the banks of the Missouri River, which now is about 2 miles south of here. From Washington, Missouri, in Franklin County, you can see this steeple coming from there, across the new river bridge.
