Drinking Fountain (dis-used) - High Street, East Grinstead, UK - Converted Fountains on Waymarking.com

This is a dis-used drinking fountain on the southern side of East Grinstead High Street. The York Stone drinking fountain was installed in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

On the morning of the Jubilee, it was covered in a black pitch resin by members of the town’s band annoyed at the withdrawal of their funding by Reverend Crawford, who had donated the fountain.

There has been demand from some residents to connect the fountain to the mains water supply. However, the town council determined that this may not be a viable option and are instead encouraging visitors to visit businesses taking part in the 'refill' scheme.
