Clarksburg Convention

On April 22, 1861, in Clarksburg, about 1,200 citizens of Harrison County met to oppose Virginia's proposed Ordinance of secession. They supported John Carlile's call for delegates to meet on May 13 in Wheeling to determine a course of action for northwestern Virginia. Conventions at Wheeling reorganized a Union Virginia government that led to West Virginia statehood.
