En source New Aquitaine:
In this part, the soil is made up of a complex sheet system, forming a reservoir and contributing only slightly to flooding phenomena, the sheets moderating surface runoff. It is therefore the upstream part of the basin which contributes mainly to a flood and it is frequent that a flood observed upstream only feels slightly on this downstream part. More rarely, when the Argenton, its main tributary to this sector taking its source further to the west, is heavily watered, it may happen that only this downstream sector is in flood, but this remains limited. In Maine et Loire, Montreuil - Bellay and Saint - Just - sur - Dive, then Saumur, where the rising floods of the Loire in the bed of the Thouet can cause significant flooding, are the main communities at stake.
The highest known waters are those of the flood of April 9, 1983 when the Thouet reached 5.86 m on the scale of the bridge of Chacé, immediately upstream of the city of Saumur.

Fr source Nouvelle Aquitaine :
