The sign says:
"Such a spacious house of worship was a welcome haven to many of the new residents who came to the South End in the 1840s and '50s. Their original parish church on Franklin Street was overcrowded by 1866. At that time, P.C. Keeley, a New York architect who specialized in Catholic churches, designed this church which became a cathedral in 1875 when it was completed.
"Boston's swelling population was due in part to the more than 55,000 Irish who fled famine at home and came to Boston before 1855."

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
