Der geschichtete Meiler hatte einen Durchmesser von ca. 8m und eine Höhe von 3m. Der kuppelförmige Meiler wurde anschließend mit Reisig, Laub, Grasboden und einer 3-5 cm dicken Schicht aus Köhlererde abgedeckt und abgedichtet.

Der Brennvorgang dauerte 8-9 Tage, je nach Buchenholzqualität. Aus 1 Raummeter Holz konnte man 90-100 kg Holzkohle gewinnen.
