Description: From Find A Grave: Civil War Union Major General, US Congressman. At the start of the Civil War, he organized a brigade of Union Infantry and Artillery for the West and was commissioned Brigadier General in April 1861. He commanded the Union forces at the Battle of Chattanooga and was promoted Major General in command the 2nd Division, Center Corps in November 1862. After the defeat at Chickamauga, he was relieved of command and served on several administrative boards until he resigned in January 1865. After the war, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first, Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, serving 1869 to 1875.
